Canberra Pest Control Group is your local provider of targeted cockroach treatments in Canberra and Queanbeyan. Whether you’re having problems with Australian cockroaches or German cockroaches, Canberra Pest Control Group will provide a cockroach treatment that’s right for your home or business. Although there are over 400 cockroach species in Australia, only a handful are problematic in Canberra: the Australian cockroach, the German cockroach, the American cockroach and the Oriental cockroach.
Signs of a cockroach infestation
Cockroaches are nocturnal scavengers that eat almost anything, including soap, toothpaste and faecal matter. As known carriers of staphylococcus, streptococcus and salmonella, an infestation of cockroaches shouldn’t be taken lightly. Home and business owners should be on the lookout for the following signs:
- Droppings – granular and black in colour (very often found in kitchens).
- Chew marks on food and food packaging – could also be rats or mice if very pronounced.
- A smell similar to rotting cabbage – a cockroach infestation smells unpleasant.
- An ootheca – cockroach eggs are incubated in a brown, organic capsule (ootheca) measuring 5-8mm in length.
- Black or brown smear marks near sources of water.
- Moulting – cockroach nymphs will shed their exoskeletons (exuviae) on the path to maturation.
Canberra Pest Control Group uses highly-effective cockroach treatments (typically gel baits) to treat cockroach infestations in Canberra and Queanbeyan. We also provide a specific cockroach treatment for German cockroaches in Canberra.
Candidates for cockroach treatments in Canberra
As local pest controllers in Canberra, we regularly come across Australian cockroaches, German cockroaches, American cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches.
Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae)
The Australian cockroach is primarily brown in colour (with a yellow stripe around the head). It’s around 20-35mm in length, and appears to enjoy eating plant matter more than other cockroach species. Contrary to its name, the Australian cockroach is not a native species.
German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)
Nasutitermes exitiosus is a subterranean termite that’s slightly darker in colour than C. frenchi, yet similar in size. Nasutitermes exitiosus is sometimes called the “snout” termite, as its mandibles are fused together. A colony of Nasutitermes exitiosus termites builds a mound (ranging in height from 30-75 centimetres) at the entrance to its nest. Nasutitermes exitiosus termites generally prefer hardwood timber to pine timber in Canberra.
American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
American cockroaches are large (30-55mm in length) and reddish-brown in colour. They’re active, fast-moving and able to fly as well. American cockroaches – sometimes referred to as “Palmetto bugs” – emit a particularly strong odour (pheromones) to attract other American cockroaches.
Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)
The oriental cockroach, which is 20-30mm in length, is dark brown to black in colour. The male oriental cockroach has wings, whereas the slightly bigger female doesn’t. The oriental cockroach is just as comfortable living outdoors (in rubbish piles), as it is indoors.
At Canberra Pest Control Group, we also come across brown banded cockroaches (Supella longipalpa) and smoky brown cockroaches (Periplaneta fuliginosa) in Canberra from time to time.
